We've had an influx of red users lately. Some of them have shown amazing potential and power, others have... Well, injured many of us with illegal shots.
I would like to petition that when a new face comes to practice, we initiate some sort of proving system before we allow them to use a red weapon. Something that demonstrates that they can CONTROL their swings and power.
It's one thing to take someone out at the knee, it's another to cause bruised eyes and nearly broken noses.
If you vote, let us know your opinion down here too.

My opinion: YES. After being sidelined for an entire practice AND losing more blood than I've ever lost in one sitting, I believe that we should restrict who can and cannot use a red.
Not only this, but STRICTER weapons checking. That sword DID NOT pass.

I vote yes too... I am all about safety. Also, yes, red weapons... I only tried a red weapon once and I see what you mean when it comes to controlling swings.
I'm just glad everyone is alright... I got knocked over a couple times from shield checking myself, but that nosebleed looked really bad. My mother who I'm living with was soooooo worried about me when I came home and told her what happened.
I also agree that weapons checks should also be done...

That sword did pass the week before, and Pheonix said that he would pass it. The cloth used doesn't seem to let the air out very well. I will making a new cover for it, as well as giving him some EVA to put another layer around it.

I vote for a "training period" also. It is always best to error to the side of saftey. We are in a golden age of expanding rite now with all the newbies coming in. And while our rules are simple, it still takes some time getting used to how things work.
I would suggest that you come to 6 practices (not 6 weeks) before using reds. And while we are at it possibly archery too. This gives the new person to really have all the rules down and fully understand how combat works.
And wepons checking could be tightened up too. Again error to the side of saftey. More than just hit testing.
Perhaps we should have "official" wepons checker positions?

Reds are dangerous in unskilled hands (as we've witnessed on MANY occasions not including the most recent ones. I recall something involving Arient and a hammer...) Archery is a good one for this list too not only because of experience (you don't want noobs using bows without being intimately familiar with the rules) but also because arrows and bows are one of the more expensive weapons to build/maintain. I would suggest that when their allocated time limit for training is up they be evaluated BEFORE they are allowed to hit the field with that weapon.

Also due to the limited number of people that read these boards, this definately should be brought up at our next practice.
I also agree with Rhiannon in that there should be the "evaluation" too
BTW to hell with voting I think a plan should be implemented ASAP. From reading the national dag board many realms have similar policies.

Yeah, with bows there isn't as much APPARENT danger, but the danger potential is astronomical, as anyone who attended Rag 24 and saw the arrow check gone awry, as the head came off and the fired shaft pierced the target's SHIELD. (thankfully, it was just the shield)

I vote yes, I used a red when I started and I was a bit dangerous with it and I still am once in a while.

Right. Yeah that's good exposure to what events and stuff will be like, when people aren't sure how long you've been doing it or how they should gauge their hits, and they are put against you with a clear cut goal. In short words, WELCOME TO DAGORHIR!

I vote no. The fact of the matter is, you're not going to get skilled or proficient with any weapon unless you use the weapon. And it doesn't matter what weapon it is, they are all inherently dangerous. I bet I could break a nose almost as easily with a wild single blue swing as I could with a red.
People duck into shots, or a weapon gets deflected, that is not the fault of the wielder. A few weeks ago when Ulric hit me with a red across both eyes and the bridge of my nose, I did not get upset at him. It was not his fault, I ducked into it. He should not be penalized or looked down upon because of my mistake.
Instead I think there should be some repercussion for making the head shot, but not the ones where the opponent ducked into it or the blow was deflected into the head. Make them do push-ups, run laps around the field, defeat a team of three - chosen by the person who took the head shot, beat their weapon against a tree for 10 minutes.
You can also give them instructions on what they can do and what they cannot do. For example, I've heard a saying about spears several time "nuts and guts." Don't go for the high shots. If the person who hasn't yet proven themselves with a certain weapon hits above the chest with a spear, or makes an over-handed swing with a red, sit them out and give them the penalty.

You are absolutely correct Dreangr. This is Dagoirhir and shit happens. lol There are a million ways to be injured on the field. And it is true that you really aren't going to get better with a weapon unless you consistently use it.
However, with red weapons in particular, the danger is elevated significantly when a new person is unskilled. The most recent incident with Wilhelm was just that: the most recent. There have been numerous occasions before this one. In the past the way this was dealt with was to place a restriction on a specific weapon. For example the warhammer I mention earlier. After Pheonix's brother was knocked unconscious by a new person it was deemed off limits to anyone other than vets.
So instead of a blanket restriction, why not go on a case-by-case basis? Draengr is a perfect example of someone who came to the game insanely skilled and who didn't really need the waiting period. However the gentleman who has become the problem most recently has been approached on many occasions by MANY vets to help him learn better technique and how NOT to hit people and he has blown them off. He insisted over and over that he didn't need any help.
This is the type of noob this thread is meant to protect against. Wilhelm's injury wasn't all THAT serious, but it could've been. And Aldvarg's was scary as hell. Safety needs to be the priority.

The reason why I would like some sort of restriction locally is because mostly ALL of other Dagorhir chapters restrict weapon usage until someone learns swing control and power management in general. These headshots haven't been a matter of ducking into it or bouncing, they've been baseball swing power straight-down shots.
If someone is gonna headshot, they are going to headshot. The person who had injured me and Aldvarg has headshotted people before, and even when we made him switch to blue and board, he headshotted more.
Think of it this way, a person learning to fight? Make them do it in a safer fashion, so that when/if they do screw up, it's not as dangerous to the person they are facing.
If/when a person wants to move on to a riskier weapon like red/bow, they should be able to demonstrate that they can use it in the proper manner, THESE are the restrictions I had in mind.
Not only this, but a more stringent weapons check, at least once every month we should re-check everything.
