I am new here. I met some of the group at the NMC bar-b-que. I was given the name Dagorhir on the back of an invite to Sunday battles. So I searched and found a lot of other things before I found my way to this site. A lot of info on how to build swords. I have never made one but I often wade in without really knowing what I am doing. Trip to Wally world and I have blue foam mats, DAP,spray adhesive, razors, ruler, some other stuff. Problem I have is the cores (and zero exp). Various places mentioned fiberglass electric fence posts and said they were the best. I went to Tractor Supply for them. Turned out to be about as big around as a pencil, they did have some square hollow stuff but it was polypropalene not fiberglass. So I ask around for the schedule 80 pipe, all they have is schedule 40 and I hear that wears stuff out faster. So, I am looking for a foamsmith who would like to advise on where to get the good cores AND trade some labor for some materials. I would like some hands on training but I have to admit my hands don't always work the way I want them to in finer more delicate ways. I have a pretty open schedule. Anyone interested?

Those pencil-width ones are good if you double or triple them up, dap them together, and tape like a mo-fo. Frankly though, your best bet for your first endeavor into weaponsmithing is pvc. We've got loaners, and a lot of people willing to help out new bloods, just show up and we'll get ya helped out and sorted out. We often schedule weapon building parties to do just that.

I plan to be there for practice thursday, looks like the rain won't come until well after. I know pvc is the way to start, but from some threads I was lead to believe I could get square tubeing and that seemed like it would be easier so I had to look for it. It is 40 miles to any large town and I was a little disappointed not to be able to get them. See you thursday.

I leave Thursday practice to the other folk. I'm a mainstay of the Sunday ones. Fiberglass is better by a long shot, but also 100% harder to find.

We still have some schedule 40 weapons around that have been in service for 4+ years... It really depends on WHAT the weapon is and how hard you swing.

OK, but on Thursday practice, I was told 10 weapons were made with thin fiberglass rods using double cores because they were thin and only two were left. I was shown a few weapons that had not been used for a long time because they were not well balanced or as comfortable. I was told by one very nice fellow that he breaks all kinds of PVC and thin fiberglass stuff. From what I have seen, everyone seems to let other people borrow their weapons. At the NMC bar-b-que, the clan seemed to be letting everyone try them that wanted too. I was standing outside and was approached and invited in and handed stuff. You don't know when the next one will break and you did say the fiberglass was better and everyone say the schedule 80 is better than the 40. Maybe we can build some so there are more loaners available. I did a lot of reading, I would really like to build some. I hope next Sunday is sunny
