One of the best ways I have seen to increase weapon control is to learn how to pull shots. The best way to do this on your own is to find a tree or post that you can practice with and try to stop your swing an inch from the post/tree. Try it from all different directions and angles and slowly you can start swinging harder to stop it short. This becomes very useful when you are faced with a situation where you will need to do so. And it will help you with hand eye coordination to plant more accurate shots. I suggest to all the vets teaching the various weapons styles to emphasize this.
